Set in December 1923 in England, the story begins with someone hiring Kelly Madigan to investigate the death of a washed-up MP. Kelly is not a detective, but figures he might as well take a couple of days to ask around, as long as the weather is not too cold. A crime story in which no one cares about the crime, and everybody just trudges along, having their tea, drinking their wine, and eating the most delicious food while trying to ignore the lingering spectre of the Great War and all those mundane nightmares clinging to their minds.
