Abstract
In her third summer in St. Louis, Missouri, Mara King is satisfied with her new life far from her family in Indiana, whose obsession with legacy and heritage has crippled her growth into an adult. To keep her mind from dwelling on her past, Mara never takes time away from her job at a coffee shop. But when her friendship with a stranger begins to grow, unexpected news from home throws Mara’s life into a loop of bad decisions that not only affect her mental health but the lives of those around her.This is a story about how hard it is to grow beyond one’s past trauma and heal. As Mara begins to understand, the past may forever lurk in one’s mind, but it ought not keep one from living in the present.
