This portfolio is an artistic perspective on the piano music of Olivier Messiaen. Through the artistic and development projects, I aimed to foster a scholarly conversation regarding the boundaries and constraints that characterise the prevailing traditions, protocols and norms within the field of performance in Western Classical Music. During the course of this doctorate, I carried out three artistic projects: the performance of the Quatuor pour la fin du Temps, The Eternal Legend and Visions of Messiaen, and a development project entitled Frequencies. In order to achieve a new perspective on Messiaen’s music, I combined it with various texts, such as extracts from the Bible, monologues by Howard Barker, poems by Cecile Sauvage together with quotations attributed to Messiaen himself, aiming to illuminate a different aspect of the composer. The results of this portfolio have not only allowed me to develop my performance and interpretation skills, but have also given me the opportunity to explore a performer’s perception of the music and how it changes according to the text with which it is paired.
