Chile and the East German public sphere
: mediations of the socialist imaginary in GDR culture between 1970 and 1983

  • Carla Maria Steinbrecher

Student thesis: Doctoral Thesis (PhD)

Abstract

The thesis Chile and the East German Public Sphere analyses the responses to the political turbulence in Chile during the 1970s as depicted in a range of East German media, including literature, radio drama, and film. It explores how representations of revolutionary change in Latin America and the Global South shaped the socialist imaginary in the GDR, and, in particular, how engagement with Chilean politics in this period was accompanied by a sustained reflection on the limits and possibilities of an East German public sphere.
