Abstract
This article draws on the history of Scottish vernacular basketry as a context for examining the relationship between craft and design. In doing so the author reveals that it is possible to take an alternative pathway to exploring design history, focussing on a practice, basketry, where skills and materials do not follow the accepted pattern of industrial development, and where hand-skills were designated as a separate practice from design.
