West Highland Museum 100: digitising cultural heritage from the Western Highlands of Scotland

The West Highland Museum 100 project showcases digital cultural heritage from the Western Highlands of Scotland. This collaboration between West Highland Museum and the University of St Andrews is exploring new ways of interacting with heritage, taking the museum experience into the home.

The museum holds important collections focused particularly around Jacobite, Highland life and the Military. Individual pieces of interest include: the Birching Table from the Fort, Gold Armlets from the late Bronze age discovered in 1871, objects relating to the massacre of the MacDonalds, a tray enabling toasts to the King over the Water, a Beetle Wing Dress and the gun used in the “Appin Murder”.

We are using and extending the Universal Viewer for the International Image Operability Framework (IIIF) to create galleries of flat, spherical and 3D media.

This combination of heritage and technology will enable the museum to tell the West Highland story in an innovative way, which is engaging and reaches out to new audiences.
