Warhol in Ten Takes

This co-edited collection will be published by the British Film Institute in 2013. It consists of a lengthy, original introduction written by the co-editors which provides an overview of Warhol's film-making career, and ten essays offering original perspectives on individual films from across the span of Warhol's cinema output. The book is illustrated with archival materials sourced from the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Anthology Film Archives in New York, and the BFI library and archives. My own essay in the book is entitled 'Bike Boy and Warhol's sexploitation cycle.' It discusses Warhol's group of sexploitation movies from 1967, and the challenges that they pose to recognised categorisation. These films fail as sexploitation, and do not adequately fit with other understandings and forms of exploitation cinema (such as the biker flick). It is suggested that framing Warhol's cinema as 'paracinematic', or as cultish, may enable a more nuanced understanding of its content, production, reception and exhibition.
