Abstract

How can we interpret heritage objects affectively through sound?

In June 2025, the SOUND/IMAGE Research Centre presented a flagship Loudspeaker Orchestra concert within the dry dock of the Cutty Sark. Supported by Royal Museums Greenwich, we explored the potential of sound to elaborate the textural, material and affective lived experiences of Cutty Sark voyages, creating virtual acoustic models of the space to enable site-specific composition and editing tailored to this unique environment.

The result was a programme of new multichannel immersive compositions inspired by maritime heritage and the iconic Cutty Sark, once one of the fastest sailing ships in the world.

Drawing on rich archival resources and the expert curatorial knowledge of Royal Museums Greenwich, this concert responded to themes of maritime heritage and its underlying drivers of innovation, human ingenuity, collaboration, ambition for global connection, and perseverance.
