Abstract

The article examines the cultural and sociolinguistic significance of the vernacular inscription engraved in niello on the largest reliquary in the Treasury of St Mark's Cathedral in Venice -- the Column of the Flagellation of Christ -- commissioned by two important government officials o the time, one of whom was to become Doge.
