Abstract

We report preliminary investigations of the preparation of alkali-reduced Aurivillius phases, and of the synthesis of YBaCuCoO5. Two new compounds, MxBi2W2O9 (M = K,Rb), have been prepared by reaction of elemental K or Rb vapour on bismuth tungstate. The possibilities - and potential difficulties - of developing new high- T(c) superconductors from these structures are briefly discussed.
