Abstract
This antiquated display of thousands of deceased flies belies one of the most significant challenges to Western medicine and colonial settlement in nineteenth and twentieth-century Africa. These tsetse-flies rendered settlement in many parts of tropical and subtropical Africa impossible, and caused the deaths of thousands of humans and animals alike.
