Abstract

The rapid digitalisation of essential services, accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, has highlighted the digital divide in our communities. This divide particularly affects older adults, who are less likely to use digital technologies and yet have to increasingly rely on them to maintain their independence and wellbeing [1]. Population ageing [2] and fast-changing technologies exacerbate this problem.
Literature, such as [3], already identifies some of the challenges older adults face in adopting digital technologies, including lack of access to devices or broadband, lack of training and support, lack of motivation, lack of digital literacy, lack of confidence and skills, concerns regarding security and privacy, inaccessible interfaces, and the perceived lack of relevant content online. However, an in-depth and nuanced understanding of these challenges is required to develop appropriate solutions to overcome them.
This presentation will discuss the insights gained from small but detailed user studies conducted with older adults in our local community over the past year to better understand the complex challenges involved in digital adoption from their perspectives, and the competing concerns and trade-offs that need to be considered when addressing these challenges. The presentation will also outline the overarching approaches to reducing the digital exclusion of older adults emerging from our work.
