Abstract

By analysing medieval Welsh hagiographies, it is shown that the contradiction between the existence of numerous female saints and the lack of female monasticism is not as surprising as it first appears. These vitae produce a model for religious women that would produce little textual or archaeological evidence, if it attracted any women at all.
