The wisdom of forgiveness: the case of Job and his friends

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This investigation intersects with studies on ethics of friendship and dynamics of domestic relationship, both refining the focus relating to ‘interpersonal forgiveness’. These themes are explored through the interactions of Job and his Friends, especially in relation to the interventions of YHWH at the conclusion to the book. Expectations regarding the maintenance of relationships relate also to other ‘wisdom’ traditions in the Hebrew Bible, and lead to a consideration of the repair of broken relationships. The case of the book of Job demonstrates the convergence of theological and ethical considerations relating to forgiveness, repentance, and reconciliation.
