Abstract

Using the analysis of Schindler et al. (1983) and Hood (1983), the 'local' stability of Zweibel (1981) is extended to include the previously neglected magnetic tension terms. A particular magnetohydrostatic field is shown to be stable if the parameter, 2 βH, is small enough. This is in contradiction to the previous 'local' analysis.
