Abstract

The reaction of (PMe)5 with grey selenium in refluxing toluene has been studied with a range of P: Se ratios. With exces selenium, P: Se = 1:2, (PMeSe2)2 is obtained, whereas when the reaction is performed with P: Se ratios of between 4:1 and 1:1, complex mixtures are obtained. (PMe)4Se3 (1) has been isolated and crystallographically characterized, it has a folded five-membered P4Se ring with the four phosphorus atoms coplanar. There are significant intermolecular non-bonded interactions between the exocyclic selenium atoms and the "vacant" tetrahedral site of the phosphorus(III) atoms.
