The plagues account in Psalm 105 and Wisdom of Solomon 11–19

Research output: Contribution to journal › Article › peer-review

Abstract

This article presents the symmetric contrast between the plagues in Egypt and the wilderness events as recounted in Ps 105:28–45. Such a structure explains the placement of the plague of darkness at the beginning as well as the omission of the fifth and sixth plagues. Wisdom of Solomon 11–19 displays a similar antithetical structure involving the same plagues and wilderness events as those in Ps 105. Wisdom may have drawn from Ps 105, and its arrangement of content confirms the contrasts observed therein.
