Abstract

Magnetogravity interactions in the solar corona are considered by extending the method proposed by Priest for modeling standing magnetohydrodynamic disturbances. The effect of gravity on the basic solutions is to increase the maxima of the plasma and magnetic pressures, but to decrease the curvature of the field lines. Also, the classification of the solutions is altered. When the transverse component of the magnetic field has a zero, more complex magnetic field structures are produced, reminiscent of coronal streamers, in which the type of interaction occurring in the plasma alters with height in the corona.
