Abstract
This paper has two principal aims. It proposes a new reading of Michel Butor's "Portrait de l'artiste en jeune singe" (1967) based on centre-periphery structures. Drawing on other work by Butor, it will be suggested that the centre-periphery dialectic in his work may be traced back to nineteenth-century German Realist poetics.
