Abstract
This paper disentangles three stands of the ethics of duty/ethics of virtue debate which are usually conflated and tries to say what is at issue in each case and how the issues bear on education theory. I argue that the most important version of the debate is the debate over the value of a sense of duty, and that the issue is best understood in terms of moral education. I also briefly defend an ethics of duty position.
