Abstract

A 3000-word entry for an exhibition-related volume to commemorate the tercentenary of the Peaces of Utrecht, Rastatt and Baden in 2013-14. This essay looks at the economic warfare and financial and commercial problems associated with the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), and explains how these pressures shaped the approach of the various protagonists towards the conduct of the war and the desirability of making an acceptable peace.
