Abstract
Not all early English texts with calendrical details fit the current genre definitions of the liturgical calendar. There seem to be many divergent examples of texts which could be seen as calendars in the sense that they have a calendrical element, but which in terms of their more varied content and functionality have a greater resemblance with martyrologies, miscellanies, and even later medieval and early modern almanacs. If seen as part of this larger and more varied genre of calendrical Gebrauchsliteratur ('functional literature'), these early medieval English texts can be linked to a characteristic set of generic traits and can benefit from a comparative approach across periods.
