Abstract

Key Messages: (1) The occurrence of microbial boundstone on carbonate slopes is often attributed to extreme conditions within confined basins or during mass extinction events. (2) The Early Triassic aftermath of the end-Permian extinction should have been especially favorable for microbial boundstone development, but the slope of the Great Bank of Guizhou (South China) isolated carbonate platform was instead dominated by detrital carbonate sedimentation. (3) Extensive microbial boundstone facies developed on the slope only after local environments became better oxygenated and metazoan–algal benthic ecosystems recovered, suggesting that the controls influencing the occurrence of microbial boundstone-dominated slopes should be reconsidered.
