Abstract
Although the history film has played an exceptionally powerful role in shaping our culture's understanding of the past, it continues to be one of the most neglected areas of both history and film studies scholarship. This essay explores some of the reasons why critical study of the history film seems to have remained in a perpetually embryonic state. Robert Rosenstone's History on Film/Film on History (Pearson, 2006) serves as a springboard for consideration of genre, the role of empirical analysis in film studies, and the large question of reenactment.
