Abstract
In October 2017, representatives from international news media networks, academia and the United Nations (UN) met to discuss the role of the media in shaping public opinion on migration. The event was organized by the United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM) against the backdrop of the United Nations University’s Chairman- ship of the United Nations Global Migration Group (GMG), an extension of the University’s effort to support Member State negotiations towards a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in 2018.2 Prior to the Workshop, a research report on Addressing Xenophobia: Representations of Migration and the Role of the Media was prepared by UNU-GCM and circulated to stimulate discussion (hereafter “Addressing Xenophobia”).
