Abstract
This article looks at the disproportionately large number of Scottish admirals who entered Russian service in the 18th century and contrasts them with similarly high migrations of skilled mariners to Denmark-Norway and Sweden in the 17th century to look for similarities and contrasts to the phenomenon. By so doing we can see this migration in a meaningful context rather than from a myopic perspective.
