Abstract

The opening speech of Job 3 has been the subject of much research related to both its structure and its relationship with other texts, but disagreement remains related to both topics. Drawing together questions of structure and textual reuse, this article uses structure as a heuristic tool for evaluating perceived instances of textual reuse in Job 3. Three types of structure – formal, conceptual, and narrative – are defined and the role of Gen 1,1-2,4a, Jer 20,14-18, and Isa 14,1-27 in the formation of these structures in Job 3 is evaluated, ultimately demonstrating how textual reuse was used as a structural strategy in Job 3.
