Abstract
Marine mammals have evolved acoustic communication systems to take advantage of favorable propagation of sound compared to other sensory modalities in the ocean. Marine mammals stand out among nonhuman mammals in their abilities for vocal production learning. Vocal learning has been demonstrate for reproductive advertisement displays in marine mammals, but it is also important for the developement of individual or group-distinctive signals.
