Abstract

We have developed quantum cascade Fabry-Perot and DFB lasers based on GaAs with emission wavelengths around 9...11 mu m. This wavelength range is particularly suitable for the sensitive detection and monitoring of a variety of important pollutant gases such as CO2 (9.5 mu m), O-3 (9.7 mu m), and NH3 (10.7 mu m) or for investigations of liquids. The lasers are mounted on standard c-mounts and can easily be incorporated into a module. In pulsed mode these devices emit peak power levels of a few mW at Peltier temperatures and exhibit continuous wavelength tuning by temperature and current.
