Abstract

This essay highlights the pivotal role that notaries played in manuscript book production in 15th and 16th-century Scotland. It summarises how notaries were appointed before and after the Scottish Reformation, outlines their multiple activities, and reveals their importance in late medieval and early modern Scottish society.
