Abstract

This book review assesses the contribution of a new wide-ranging contribution to theatre studies in which the achievements of major dramatists like Moliere, Beaumarchais and Goldoni are shown to be rooted in the modes and values of the two strands of Italian comedy of the sixteenth century: classically derived theatregrams from commedia erudita and the popularizing plotlines of commedia dell'arte.
