Abstract

In the first two decades of the twenty-first century, garbage pollution became one of Asia’s biggest ecological problems. How do artists and designers in Hong Kong engage with materials that are commonly perceived as trash? Documenting creative engagement with ‘garbage’ materials, this exhibition shows examples of artistic research into upcycling and recycling strategies in Hong Kong art and jewellery design. Subverting concepts of what is waste and what is valuable, the research presented offers insights into the development of aesthetically appealing solutions to Hong Kong’s garbage problem. The display complements the exhibition RePlace / RePlay: UpCycling in Hong Kong Art and Jewellery, 14.5. to 30.5.2021, at Goethe-Institut Hong Kong, Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
