Abstract
This article considers the impact of globalisation on contemporary lens-based projects from Scotland. Theoretically, it is rooted in the discussion of the impact of globalisation on cultural formations. Issues of local and regional identities are examined, most especially where these represent a response to the challenges of economic, political and social change. The construction of ‘hybrid’ identities is core to this discussion for here the contest of cultural and symbolic narratives is played out. Taking, as its subject, documentary projects from Scotland, a region whose identity claims are national and sometimes nationalist, the article explores the complex boundaries between the global and the local, the national and the regional, the universal and the particular. In reflecting on these associations the article examines how a regional photography approaches the diorama of a global multiculture.
