Abstract

This short book is a contribution to the prestigious BFI Film Classics series. It offers a concise and fresh take on Nicholas Ray's 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause. Rather than focusing on the film as one about adolescence, the book concentrates on the topic of rebellion, and what it meant to act rebelliously in the US in the mid-1950s. The book outlines the film's development, and discusses such topics as Method acting, the film's engagement with questions of gender and sexuality, as well as its tackling of topics such as atomic politics.
