Rapid growth of a supraglacial lake, Ngozumpa Glacier, Khumbu Himal, Nepal.

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Between October 1998 and October 1999, a supraglacial lake on the Ngozumpa Glacier, Khumbu Himal, Nepal, underwent rapid growth, mainly by a combination of calving retreat and basin flooding during the 1999 monsoon season. The lake is unlikely to develop into a large moraine-dammed lake, but while it persists, growth of the lake will probably continue to result in locally high rates of ablation, contributing to overall downwasting of the glacier surface.
