Abstract

Automotive catalyst samples consisting of Rh, Pt and Pd particles supported on a texturally stable Ce0.68Zr0.32O2 mixed oxide support were studied by High Resolution Transition Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) after reduction at a range of temperatures. The majority of metal particles had regular morphologies and were crystallographically aligned with the oxide support. At higher reduction temperatures, some unusual effects were observed in a minority of metal particles. These included decoration of the metal particles by the support material and the formation of "pedestals" of support material directly beneath some metal particles.
