Abstract
This article presents transmasculine fatherhood based on the analysis of the case of Tiago, a trans man, and his family in the city of Salvador, Bahia, based on the anthropological notion of relatedness. The work focuses on the construction of kinship relations as processes that emerge during Tiago's biographical trajectory in which he transitions gender. To this end, it examines how the meanings of fatherhood and motherhood are negotiated from a pregnancy prior to gender transition; the processes involving the choice of a relative as a donor for home insemination; and the construction of parental relations outside the “biological” realm. The analysis highlights the nuances of the experiences of fatherhood experienced by Tiago and his family over time, including the challenges and strategies adopted to face them in a context of gender transition. Thus, relations, whether “biological” or not, are always being created and are not given a priori, and Tiago's case is an example of this.
