Abstract

Formation of o-methylstyrylalkynes by flash vacuum pyrolysis of the corresponding stabilised phosphorus ylides at 900 degrees C is accompanied by unexpected cyclisation to give 2-alkenylnaphthalenes and deuterium labelling has been used to elucidate the mechanisms involved.
