Abstract

The structure of the dimethylzinc adduct with the bidentate amine 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane, [Me2Zn(C5H4N)CH2CH2CH2(C5H4N)]n, 1, has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystals of 1 are monoclinic, space group P21/m, with two molecules within a unit cell of dimensions a=5.364(3) Å, b=12.839(3) Å, c=10.618(3) Å and β=92.76(3)°. The structure is polymeric, being composed of [Me2Zn(C5H4N)CH2CH2CH2(C5H4N)] units with the nitrogens within a specific 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane ligand bonding to adjacent zinc centres. The zinc atom is four-co-ordinate, bonding to two carbon and two nitrogen atoms, with the C—Zn—C angle of 145.5(2)° intermediate between that of a linear and tetrahedral bond arrangement. As far as we know, this is the first example of a polymeric alkyl zinc/cadmium amine adduct to have been structurally characterised. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
