Abstract

Newmont (now Newmont Goldcorp) commissioned CSRM to undertake a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) of the Tanami Operations in central Australia. This SIA – substantially undertaken in 2018 – updates and extends the previous SIA by CSRM in 2013. Newmont Goldcorp Tanami Operations are located on Aboriginal freehold land in the Northern Territory. It operates through agreements with Warlpiri Traditional Owners under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. The mine site is remote: the nearest community is Yuendumu, 270 km to the southeast. Newmont Goldcorp has fully owned and operated the Tanami Operations since 2012, although gold mining activities in the Tanami Desert region began much earlier, in the early 20th Century.
