Abstract

This chapter reviews the strategy of neutrality developed by Sweden during times of war between the great European powers. Although the later league of armed neutrality of the 18th century is well known, this chapter demonstrates that Sweden had long developed responses to the predation of her shipping. Reviewing the various conflicts and Swedish responses to them shows the effectiveness of Swedish neutrality in protecting her commerce. Based on original research, this chapter contributes significantly to the growing literature on neutrality during times of war.
