N2 - This paper examines the creation of Bucharest’s first educational institution to include elements of modern design in its curriculum, the Academy of Decorative Arts, a private enterprise that functioned from 1924 to 1929, offering a wide spectrum of classes. Previous studies have linked the Academy with M. H. Maxy and his visit to the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1922, however newly discovered documentation indicates that the Academy’s curriculum was more likely the brainchild of designer Andrei Vespremie, originally from Covasna. Vespremie attended the Schule Reimann in Berlin in the early 1920s, an important centre of innovation for modern commercial design that at its peak had five times more students than the Bauhaus. The Academy’s curriculum closely matches that of the Schule Reimann and thus a reappraisal of its origins is now necessary.
