Abstract
This article shifts the discussion of Scottish Highlanders away from the older narrative that Gaels could only migrate to Scandinavia as mercenaries. At the same time it challenges notions of mercenary service as well, and contrasts this against a host of other motivations such as Kith and Kin loyalty, dynastic allegiance and confessional considerations.
