N2 - This report uses on-demand delivery work (done by self-employed individuals who deliver food and parcels through algorithmically managed platforms, also referred to as “platform workers” or “gig workers”) as a case study to explore this regulatory challenge and to illustrate the complex relationship between emerging AI technologies and innovations, human workers, and risk. We explore the policy gap between UK employment law, data protection regulation, and emerging proposals to regulate AI and related technologies. Furthermore, we examine how trade unions and local workers’ collectives have been responding to these risks.
