Abstract

There is good evidence that many marine mammal species mimic sounds of other species and use imitation of conspecific sounds in the development of their normal vocal repertoires. Motor imitation is more difficult to study, but sufficient evidence exists to suggest that marine mammals are promising species for controlled studies of vocal mimicry and motor imitation.
