    Abstract

Four metabentonites, including three new discoveries, are described from the Sandbian Stage, Upper Ordovician, of southern Scotland. They are compared geochemically with suites of more numerous contemporary metabentonites from Scandinavia. Two correlations are made with the Scandinavian suites that confirm relative stratigraphical age relationships. The Scottish examples represent distal ash falls from a volcanic source between Avalonia and Baltica.
