Abstract
The paper engages with the common assessment of lyric poetry in the nineteenth-century as derivative and poor by examining an ostensibly 'bad' poem by a major nineteenth century author. Interpreting the poem in the context of Fontane's biography and other writings allows us to see the poem as expressive of an aesthetic practice; the paper suggests that the role lyric poetry plays in Fontane's oeuvre parallels aesthetic reflections in his other, more positively valued works.
