Lost Chords and Christian Soldiers: The Church and Sacred Music of Arthur Sullivan

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

This monograph provides the first comprehensive study of the church and sacred music of one of Victorian Britain's leading composers and locates it in the context of Victorian religion, sentimentality and church history. Based on primary sources, including Sullivan's unpublished letters and diaries, it substantially challenges received and prevalent views about Sullivan's own religious position and provides definitive lists and analysis of his hymn tunes, anthems, scared solos and part songs and oratorios and cantatas, correcting many previous errors.
