Abstract

This article provides an overview of language curricula and approaches to their design. It defines the term “language curriculum”, focusing on key curriculum components of aims, intended learning outcomes, methods of learning and teaching, syllabus, and assessment. Following this, a framework of three different approaches to language curriculum design is shared, detailing models of forward, central, and backward design. The final sections describe the potential influence on curricula of language teaching approaches and methods, cultural considerations, language competency frameworks, technological developments, and other local contextual needs.
