Abstract

The German occupation of north-east France during the Great War has been buried beneath the memory of the 'dark years' of 1940-1944. It is only recently that historians have begun to study this occupation, which touched more than 2 million civilians. This book looks at a rather neglected aspect of this occupation: the cultural life that continued despite, and also because of, the presence of the German Army.
